GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Minister of Education Sonia Parag has announced that distribution of the enhanced annual school cash grant will officially commence on June 29, 2026. This year’s package represents a substantial fiscal increase per student and introduces a brand-new transportation allowance to cushion household expenses nationwide.

Under the revised framework, parents will receive a total of $85,000 per child. Minister Parag emphasized that the financial relief applies universally to every student enrolled across the Guyanese education system, encompassing both public and private institutions across all ten administrative regions.

Reflecting on the program’s policy trajectory, the Education Minister noted that the administration has prioritized incremental relief for families. “Six years ago, when His Excellency took office, he ensured that the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant that was taken away from children was restored,” Parag stated. “Not only restored, but increased over the last five years.”

The $85,000 total payout is broken down into three distinct state allocations:

  • The Core ‘Because We Care’ Grant: Increased from $50,000 in 2025 to $60,000 per student.
  • The Uniform Grant: Maintained at a fixed $5,000 allocation.
  • The Transportation Grant: A newly introduced $20,000 subsidy per child, fulfilling a policy commitment made by the administration.

“We had promised to increase the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant,” Parag reiterated during her address. “So that’s being increased from where it was left at $50,000 in 2025 to $60,000 now, plus the uniform grant of $5,000—so that’s $65,000—and introducing a new transportation grant which we also committed to the people of Guyana.”

The Ministry of Education expects the multi-billion-dollar distribution campaign to benefit tens of thousands of students. The early summer rollout is intentionally timed to allow parents ample time to acquire textbooks, uniforms, and educational materials ahead of the new academic term.
