The 2025 Honey Fest has been hailed a major success, as dozens of local beekeepers showcased their products and innovations under the theme “Buzz Forward: Sweet Innovations for a Safe and Sustainable Future.”

Delivering remarks at the closing ceremony, Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, underscored the critical role bees play in agriculture and environmental sustainability, describing them as “silent heroes” vital to human survival.

“Beekeeping is more than just collecting honey. It’s a science that contributes to pollination, food security, and ecological balance,” Mustapha stated.

The Minister revealed that the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) is working to expand the country’s honey production network to over 5,000 hives as part of the government’s vision for self-sufficiency and regional export by 2030.

According to a recent FAO value chain assessment, Guyana’s honey sector continues to grow steadily, reflecting increased production and market interest.

Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Vickash Ramkissoon, noted that local beekeepers are projected to produce 30,000 gallons of honey in 2025, marking a consistent upward trend over the past few years.

“We now have more than 200 active beekeepers, a growing consumer base, and a product that rivals imported alternatives,” Ramkissoon said, highlighting honey’s potential to transform rural livelihoods through value-added production.

Chief Plant Protection Officer, Brian Sears, also emphasized the importance of maintaining strict quality standards, noting that honey safety and processing practices are key to sustaining market competitiveness and achieving export readiness.

“Honey is one of nature’s purest foods, but its value depends on how it’s harvested, handled, and processed,” Sears remarked.

The Ministry of Agriculture says it will continue to invest in training, research, and technology to enhance productivity and ensure Guyana’s honey industry meets international standards — positioning it as a future exporter within CARICOM.
