The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport continues its push to strengthen Guyana’s sporting framework. On Monday, Minister Steven Jacobs met with a group of former and current national athletes to discuss athlete welfare, mentorship, and the future of Guyanese sports. The meeting focused on creating career pathways in coaching and training and emphasized the importance of linking sports with education.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has officially kicked off the 60th edition of its annual Inter-Unit Swimming and Track & Field Championships. The competition began with a 9km road relay, where Base Camp Stevenson took first place. In the pool, the Coast Guard dominated overall standings, with the GDF Training Corps and Third Infantry Battalion following closely. The championships continue through the week, culminating with the finals on Friday.
In golf, Dr. Joaan Deo claimed victory at the Trophy Stall Golf Tournament held at the Lusignan Golf Club. Deo, who described the win as “especially meaningful” being just four months postpartum, posted a gross score of 82 and net 68 to edge out Fazil Haniff on countback. Additional awards went to Troy Cadogan for the longest drive and Ian Gavaya for nearest to the pin.
In football, action resumed in the Georgetown Football Association’s Senior Men’s League, where Genesis FC defeated Northstars FC 3–1, while Veggies FC and Camptown FC drew 2–2 in a thrilling encounter.
And finally, in cricket, the East Coast Cricket Board’s Navin’s Construction First Division Tournament began with multiple fixtures on Sunday.
- Fairfield defeated Better Hope by nine wickets.
- Young Rivals crushed Lusignan B by 135 runs.
- Lusignan A earned an 80-run win over Golden Grove A, thanks to a superb unbeaten 109 from Anil Singh.
- At Buckton, Industry All-Stars chased down 152 with ease, powered by Mahendra Singh’s 61.
