Berbice Stadium Nears Completion
Construction of the Palmyra International Stadium in Berbice is progressing on schedule and is expected to be completed by early 2026. The 10,000-seat venue is being built to meet International Cricket Council (ICC) standards, positioning Berbice as a major host for international cricket alongside the National Stadium at Providence Stadium.
The modern facility significantly expands Guyanaโs sporting infrastructure beyond Georgetown and is designed to accommodate night matches, broadcast requirements, and multi-purpose events. In addition to hosting cricket matches, the stadium is expected to host concerts and conventions, providing a major economic boost to Region Six. Once completed, the venue is expected to host key T20 internationals and Caribbean Premier League (CPL) fixtures.
Lusignan Golf Club Sets Sights on Growth in 2026
The Lusignan Golf Club has announced a strong start to 2026, with a renewed focus on growth, leadership, and expanded partnerships. In a press release, the club highlighted successful 2024 and 2025 seasons and unveiled plans for a full calendar of national and regional tournaments, including the AmCham Golf Tournament.
Ongoing investments in course equipment, golf carts, and clubhouse upgrades are steadily improving playing conditions and enhancing the overall member experience. The club reported growing membership and strong staff retention, and extended an invitation to corporate sponsors to partner in its continued development and facility enhancements.
Everest Cricket Club Honours 2025 Standout Performers
The Everest Cricket Club recently hosted its 2025 awards ceremony at the clubโs newly renovated banquet hall, recognizing top performers across all divisions.
In the Second Division, Nityanand Mathura claimed both Batsman of the Year and Bowler of the Year honours. First Division accolades saw Tagenarine Chanderpaul named Batsman of the Year, while Javed Rasheed secured Bowler of the Year.
In the Masters category, Hemraj Garbarran was named Batsman of the Year, with Lookeshwar Mahabeer taking Bowler of the Year. Special Masters awards went toย Vishan Lallย andย Shazam Ramjohnย for the highest individual scores, whileย Surujdeo Ramdeenย was recognized for the best bowling figures.
Additional special recognition was awarded to Tagenarine Chanderpaul for his Test recall, Matthew Nandu for his Senior Inter-County Super50 title and national captaincy, Richie Looknauth for his First-Class debut, and Nityanand Mathura for his national Under-19 selection. Antonell Atwell was also honoured for securing the West Indies Over-40s World Cup MVP title.
Guyana Senior Women Prepare for Regional Tournaments
Guyanaโs Senior Womenโs Cricket Team is currently engaged in a one-week training camp as preparations intensify for the upcoming Regional Super50 and Womenโs T20 Blaze tournaments. The camp is being managed by Clive Grimmond, with Tremaine Smart serving as Head Coach.
The camp focuses on sharpening skills and strengthening team cohesion. The side will be captained by experienced West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Chamaine Campbell, with Ashmini Munisar named vice-captain.
The camp concludes on January 7, ahead of Guyanaโs opening fixture in the 2026 Womenโs T20 Blaze against the Windward Islands at the Arnos Vale Playing Field. Team Guyana enters the competition focused on defending their T20 Blaze title and mounting a strong Super50 campaign.
Horse Racing Highlights at Rising Sun Turf Club
Horse racing action unfolded at the Jumbo Jet 2026 New Yearโs Horse Race Meet, featuring eight races at the Rising Sun Turf Club on Sunday.
The feature stakes race was claimed byย Stat, ridden byย Clifton Ross, ahead ofย One Sharp Cookieย withย Jose Da Silvaย in second andย Companheiro Leal,ย ridden byย Ronaldo Appadu,ย in third.
Other winners on the day included Republican in the L Class Open, Three D Movie in the K Class and Lower, Irish Eyes in the I3 and Lower Three-Year-Old event, Here Comes Heidi in the H2 and Lower Open, Barbra in the F Class and Imported Maidens, Summer Time in the Three-Year-Old Guyana Bred Derby, and Moonlight Dancer in the Three-Year-Old Imported Derby.
