Government Unveils Five-Year Strategic Vision for Sport

Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Steven Jacobs, has outlined an ambitious five-year strategic vision to transform Guyana’s sporting landscape.

In an official statement, Minister Jacobs reaffirmed the Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali-led PPP/C Administration’s commitment to empowering young Guyanese through sport while elevating national sporting standards. The vision focuses on athlete development, infrastructure expansion, governance reform, and expanded youth participation opportunities, positioning sport as a key pillar of national growth over the next five years.

Guyanese Squash Players Head to British Junior Open

Guyana will be represented on the international squash stage when three young athletes compete in the prestigious Centenary British Junior Open 2026, scheduled for January 2–6 in Birmingham, England.

The tournament is expected to feature approximately 752 players from 60 countries. Representing Guyana will be Mohryan Baksh in the Under-19 category, Egan Bulkan in the Under-15 division, and Ethan Bulkan in the Under-13 category. Their participation marks another milestone for the continued growth of squash in Guyana.

Western Tigers Crowned GFF Super 16 Champions

Football action concluded in the 2025 GFF Super 16 Cup on Thursday at the National Training Centre in Providence with two decisive fixtures.

In the third-place playoff, GDF FC secured a commanding 3–0 victory over GPF FC. Abumchi Apara delivered a standout performance with a brace, while Jeffrey Perreira added a third goal.

In the grand final, Western Tigers FC produced a significant upset, edging Elite League champions Slingerz FC 1–0. Kevon Woodley scored the decisive goal to seal the title. Western Tigers walked away with the top cash prize of $2 million, while Slingerz FC earned $1 million for second place. GDF FC collected $750,000 for third place, and GPF FC received $500,000 for finishing fourth.

Kashif & Shanghai President’s Futsal Tournament Concludes

The 3rd Kashif and Shanghai President’s Futsal Tournament concludes tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown with six fixtures across multiple categories.

The evening began at 18:00 hrs with the Schoolboys third-place playoff between New Central High School and Westminster Secondary. At 19:00 hrs, West Side faced Street Vybz in the Women’s third-place match. The Women’s Final between Lady Kanaimas and Lady Royals followed.

The Schoolboys Final is scheduled for 21:00 hrs, featuring West Ruimveldt Secondary School against Dolphin Secondary School. At 22:00 hrs, Bomb Squad and Sparta Boss will contest the Senior Men’s third-place playoff. The tournament will climax with the Senior Men’s Final, as Road Warriors face Bent Street ‘A’ in what promises to be a thrilling finale.

Historic Showdown Set for New Year’s Horse Racing Meet

Horse racing enthusiasts are set for a blockbuster clash at the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee’s Annual New Year’s Horse Race Meet on Sunday at the Rising Sun Turf Club, West Coast Berbice.

The feature race will see an epic showdown between two undefeated champions. Olympic Kremlin, the 2024 Horse of the Year and multiple Guyana Cup and President’s Cup winner, will face Dataman, the unbeaten 2025 Guyana Cup and President’s Cup champion. Both horses boast perfect records and have proven themselves over the one-mile distance.

With bragging rights and supremacy on the line, the clash between Slingerz Racing Stable and Master Z Racing Stable is being billed as one of the most anticipated races in Guyanese horse racing history.
