GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — A packed weekend of Guyanese sports saw the emergence of track stars, the clinical finish of a veteran cyclist, and a record-breaking performance on the cricket pitch. From the high-velocity CARIFTA trials in Linden to the massive football scores in the Tertiary tournament, Guyanese athletes are hitting their stride in February 2026.


Athletics: Sprint Stars Secure CARIFTA Tickets

The Bayroc National Stadium in Linden was the center of the athletics world on Saturday as the second CARIFTA Games Trials saw four young athletes punch their tickets to the regional showpiece.

  • The 100m Dash: In the Boys U-20 category, Onesi Dunn and Gordon Thompson silenced the crowd with times of 10.32 and 10.38 seconds respectively, both comfortably meeting the qualification standard.
  • The 400m Mastery: Tishawn Easton (46.42s) and Kaidon Persaud (47.28s) also secured their spots in the Boys U-20 400m, demonstrating exceptional mid-distance speed.

Cycling: Christopher Griffith Outmaneuvers the Field

The annual L.F.S. Burnham Memorial Cycle Road Race on Sunday delivered a tactical masterclass.

  • The Attack: Christopher Griffith emerged as the overall champion, timing his final surge to perfection to overcome a field of Guyana’s top riders. He was followed by Stephen Mungru in second and Alexis Mendes in third.
  • Category Winners:
    • 35+: Ralph Williams
    • Juniors: Alex Newton
    • Masters 50+: Raymond Newton
    • Category 4: Kwame Fortune

Basketball: Guyana to Host Grenada in March

Following their second-place finish in Suriname, Guyana’s Senior Men’s National Team is ramping up its regional engagement.

  • The Series: A 3-game series against Grenada is scheduled for March 6–8 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
  • The Goal: GBF President Michael Singh emphasized that these games are crucial for building the chemistry and execution needed for major regional competitions later this year.

Football: 18-0 Thrashing in Tertiary Tournament

The 2026 MODEC Tertiary Football Tournament saw some of the widest scoring margins in recent memory this past week.

Sunday Highlights:

  • The Blowout: The University of Guyana delivered a staggering 18-0 defeat to the Guyana Industrial Training Centre.
  • GTI Wins: Government Technical Institute cruised to a 5-1 victory over Texila American University.

Tuesday Highlights:

  • ETI Perseveres: Essequibo Technical Institute edged out Leonora Technical 5-3.
  • The Draw: UG Tain Campus and Upper Corentyne ITC played to a thrilling 2-2 stalemate.
  • PMTI Victory: Port Mourant Tech defeated New Amsterdam Tech 3-1.

Cricket: Seecharan’s 151 Powers Demerara to Victory*

The GCB U-16 50-Overs Inter-County Tournament witnessed a batting masterclass on Tuesday as Demerara dominated the Select XI.

  • The Century: Captain Lomar Seecharan hammered a retired unbeaten 151, supported by Nathan Bishop’s 67, as Demerara posted a massive 358-8.
  • The Defense: Makai Dowlin then dismantled the Select XI batting order, taking 5-17 to dismiss them for just 106.
  • Berbice Stays Strong: At Lusignan, Berbice secured a 73-run win over Essequibo. Asgarali Nabi (52) and Captain Leon Reddy (41 & 2 wickets) were instrumental in the victory.
