It was a weekend of high-scoring thrillers and dominant performances across Guyana’s sporting landscape. From “thumping” victories in tertiary football to a clinical West Indies performance in Mumbai, local and international athletes are raising the bar as the 2026 season heats up.


Football: High Scores and Forfeits in Elite Competition

The beautiful game saw explosive action in two major tournaments this past weekend, with Mahaicony Technical Institute and the Guyana Police Force leading the goal-scoring charts.

MODEC Tertiary Football Tournament:

  • Mahaicony’s Mastery: The Mahaicony Technical Institute proved unstoppable, securing a 10-3 victory over the Guyana School of Agriculture on Thursday, followed by an 8-2 win in their Saturday rematch at Buxton. Tyrel Delph and Omar Williams both secured hattricks in the opening clash.
  • Berbice & West Demerara: Essequibo Technical Institute dominated Leonora Technical 5-1, while Linden Technical Institute edged out CPCE 4-2.

GFF Elite League Cup (Providence):

  • GDF Stays Strong: The Guyana Defence Force FC lived up to their favorites tag with a 5-0 victory over Fruta Conquerors.
  • Police Force “Thrashing”: The Guyana Police Force FC secured a 9-0 win against Den Amstel FC. The match ended prematurely when Den Amstel forfeited by refusing to take the field for the second half. Carl Griffith stole the show with a superb hattrick.

Basketball: St. Rose’s Offensive Explosion

Georgetown’s school courts were on fire on Friday as the 2026 Schools Basketball League continued.

  • The Nail-Biter: At Burnham Court, St. Stanislaus College barely escaped with a 49-48 win over President’s College. Daniel Chisholm was the standout performer with a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds).
  • The Blowout: St. Rose’s High delivered a clinical performance at the Marian Academy Court, defeating the hosts 90-21. The win was fueled by a staggering 58-point second-half surge.
  • Up Next: President’s College will look for revenge on Wednesday as they host St. Stanislaus on their home court.

Cricket: Essequibo Unveils U-16 Squad; Windies Secure Super 8

The cricketing world is buzzing with new talent in Guyana and a powerful West Indies campaign in India.

GCB Inter-County U-16:

The Essequibo Cricket Board has officially named its squad for the Inter-County Tournament (Feb 16–21). Led by Ethan Silas, the team features a strong core including vice-captain Ravid Fredericks and bowling prospect Mark Anthony Obermuller.

2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup (Mumbai):

The West Indies have officially advanced to the Super 8 stage after an unbeaten 3-0 start.

  • Defeating Nepal: The Windies limited Nepal to 133-8, with Jason Holder earning Player of the Match honors for his 4-27.
  • The Chase: Captain Shai Hope (61)* and Shimron Hetmyer (46)* made easy work of the target, reaching 134-1 in just 15.2 overs.
  • Next Stop: The final group match against Italy at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Thursday.
