Brazil – Lula Rebukes U.S. at UN
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva issued a sharp rebuke of U.S. foreign policy during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, condemning recent unilateral actions targeting Brazil’s institutions and economy.
Lula criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs, visa restrictions, and financial sanctions following the trial and conviction of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving 27 years in prison for plotting a coup after his 2022 election defeat.
Washington has also sanctioned Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and, most recently, revoked visas for six senior Brazilian officials, while slapping a 50% tariff on U.S. imports of Brazilian goods.
Lula defended Brazil’s judicial process, stressing the importance of respecting democratic institutions and due process.
Bahamas – Deacon Sentenced for Child Molestation
In the Bahamas, a 59-year-old church deacon has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for molesting a 10-year-old girl two years ago.
The High Court, presided over by Justice Deidra Fitzpatrick, handed down the sentence after a nine-member jury unanimously convicted him of two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse.
The abuse occurred in January and February 2023, while the victim was living with the convict and his wife—her maternal aunt—following her mother’s death. The case came to light when a school guidance counselor reported it to the authorities.
Justice Fitzpatrick highlighted the alarming prevalence of sexual crimes against minors in her ruling. The convict continues to maintain his innocence.
