Residents across Trinidad and Tobago were forced into emergency mode on Sunday after the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) dumped relentless rainfall from Saturday night into midday Sunday.

  • Communities such as Piarco, Bamboo No. 2, and Diego Martin experienced street flooding, triggering swift responses from residents and regional corporations.
  • Many households began sandbagging, moving pets and vehicles, and securing belongings as water levels rose.
  • The heavy downpours come as a warning shot ahead of the 2025 rainy season, prompting calls for immediate government preparedness and drainage improvements.

Brazil: Bird Flu Outbreak Hits Major Poultry Exporter

Brazil is facing a critical poultry health crisis after its first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was detected at a commercial chicken farm in Rio Grande do Sul.

  • The discovery prompted immediate trade bans from China, the EU, Mexico, Argentina, and others.
  • Over 1.7 million eggs and 450 metric tons have already been destroyed to contain the virus.
  • A task force has been deployed to monitor 524 nearby farms within a 10-kilometer radius, as Brazil races to prevent a wider outbreak.

USA: Mexican Navy Ship Crashes into Brooklyn Bridge

A Mexican Navy training vessel collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night, resulting in two fatalities and 22 injuries.

  • The ship’s 147-foot mast was too tall to clear the bridge and struck the structure, toppling the mast.
  • The vessel was decorated with lights and a giant Mexican flag, and was sailing near the East River, connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan.
  • Of the 277 persons on board, none fell into the water.
  • Three people sustained serious injuries, and emergency response was swift with no diving operations required.
