UN Human Rights Chief: At Least 2,300 Killed This Year in Haiti Gang Violence

By Antonio Dey | HGP Nightly News|

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — United Nations Human Rights Chief, Volker Türk, has issued an urgent plea to international authorities to aggressively confront the rampant impunity gripping Haiti, as catastrophic gang violence continues to destabilize the crisis-ravaged Caribbean nation of 12 million people.

Delivering his comprehensive global update at the opening of the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Türk presented a grim statistical breakdown of the humanitarian disaster. He reported that localized gang warfare, mass rapes, and systemic looting have resulted in more than 2,300 deaths, 1,100 physical injuries, and 99 targeted kidnappings within the first half of this year alone.

To combat the escalating bloodshed, the UN Security Council has formally approved a new international Global Security Force (GSF). This high-powered intervention unit is designed to entirely replace the under-equipped Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, with a finalized strategy to deploy 5,500 heavily armed troops in successive operational phases.

The human rights update marks the beginning of the 47-country council’s second regular session of 2026, which is scheduled to run until July 7. Highlighting the severity of the crisis, UN Spokesman Farhan Haq confirmed that UN Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to arrive in Port-au-Prince on Tuesday for a high-profile solidarity visit with the victims of the ongoing gang warfare.

PAHO Calls For Strengthening Voluntary Blood Donation in the Americas

By Antonio Dey

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has launched a sweeping regional campaign urging member states to strengthen voluntary, unpaid blood donation frameworks to guarantee equitable access to safe blood and blood products across the Americas.

Commemorating World Blood Donor Day under the localized 2026 campaign theme, “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives,” the international public health agency stressed that regular, non-remunerated donations remain the baseline cornerstone of resilient healthcare systems.

According to PAHO’s latest epidemiological and medical asset registries, only about 51.5% of the region’s current blood supply is derived from altruistic, voluntary donors. The remaining percentage relies heavily on replacement donations from patients’ families, presenting steep challenges to achieving sustainable, safe, and modern blood banking systems.

In an official communiqué, PAHO extended formal gratitude to regular donors while calling on a broader cross-section of the public to join the life-saving registry. The organization strongly urged regional health ministries to permanently finance national blood programs, upgrade processing blood services, and remove systemic barriers to ensure that safe blood is readily available in emergencies without financial hardship to patients.

Iran and U.S. Agree to Halt War and Reopen Hormuz, Sending Oil Prices Tumbling

By Antonio Dey

PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD — Global energy markets experienced an immediate, sharp contraction on Monday after United States and Iranian officials announced a preliminary breakthrough pact to halt their devastating war and immediately reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz shipping corridor.

While the historic memorandum of understanding is currently structured as a framework agreement—leaving the highly contentious fate of Tehran’s nuclear development infrastructure to a secondary phase of intense diplomacy—it represents the most significant breakthrough since the conflict erupted with joint U.S.-Israeli kinetic strikes on Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Sunday evening, declaring to the public that “the Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete.” The executive announcement closely followed a formal declaration by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose administration has functioned as the primary diplomatic mediator throughout the conflict. Sharif confirmed that the final terms of the preliminary pact were definitively struck early Monday morning local time, with an official signing ceremony scheduled for Friday in Switzerland.

According to a public brief shared by Prime Minister Sharif on X, the foundational pact demands the “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”

The regional theater has been heavily devastated by the conflict, with thousands of casualties documented and more than 1.2 million Lebanese citizens internally displaced following Israel’s sweeping offensive against Hezbollah forces. Both Israel and Hezbollah have consistently ignored ceasefire ultimatums from Washington, adding a layer of operational volatility to the deal.

The breakthrough comes at a critical political juncture for President Trump and congressional Republicans facing severe domestic blowback ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, as soaring gas and commodity prices continue to frustrate American consumers. Furthermore, Trump faces intense, immediate pressure from hawk factions within his own party to demand a total dismantling of Iran’s nuclear capabilities, especially given his historic executive withdrawal from the 2015 Obama-era Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
