St. Lucia: Family Grieves After Deadly Weekend Shooting
A community in Dennery, St. Lucia, is in mourning following the tragic murder of 36-year-oldย Jimmy Charles,ย one of two reported killings over the weekend. Police say Charles was gunned down around 9:17 p.m. on Friday, June 27, in the Tomaso area. His body was found in a roadside shed with multiple gunshot wounds.
Graphic footage of the incident quickly circulated online. Charlesโs mother-in-law, Janet John, said her daughterโthe mother of Charlesโs two childrenโis devastated by the news.
โSheโs really, really down from the time it happened,โ John said.
Cayman Islands: Privy Council Upholds Same-Sex Civil Partnerships
In a landmark ruling, Londonโs Privy Councilโthe highest court of appeal for the British Overseas Territoriesโhas upheld the Cayman Islandsโ 2020 civil partnership law that allows same-sex couples legal recognition.
The law, introduced by former Governor Martin Roper after local lawmakers narrowly voted against it, was challenged by attorney Kina Anglin, who argued it violated the islandsโ constitution. However, the court ruled in favor of the civil partnership legislation, stating that constitutional human rights must be upheld regardless of parliamentary votes.
Campaign group Colours Caribbean hailed the ruling as a victory for equality and human dignity.
