HGP REGIONAL NEWS – FEBRUARY 11, 2026

By Tiana Cole | HGP Nightly News |

— Today’s headlines are dominated by a push for global health equity, a major shift in the U.S.-Venezuela energy relationship, and a national tragedy in Canada. Here is your evening news brief for Wednesday, February 11.

WHO: Millions Await Sight-Restoring Cataract Surgery

A new study published in The Lancet Global Health reveals that nearly half of the people suffering from cataract-related blindness globally still lack access to surgery. Despite being one of the most cost-effective medical procedures, geographic and gender inequities continue to hinder progress.

  • The Scale: More than 94 million people worldwide are currently affected by cataracts.
  • The Goal: While surgical coverage has increased by 15% over the last two decades, the WHO warns that progress must accelerate sharply to meet the World Health Assembly’s target of a 30% increase in coverage by 2030.
  • The Call to Action: Governments are being urged to prioritize underserved populations, particularly in rural areas, where a simple 15-minute procedure could prevent permanent blindness.

U.S. Issues Historic Oil and Gas License for Venezuela

In a move that signals a rapid thawing of relations following the capture of Nicolás Maduro in January, the U.S. Treasury Department has issued a general license allowing for the exploration and production of oil and gas in Venezuela.

  • Energy Expansion: The license authorizes U.S. technology, software, and services to be used for drilling and development. The U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts a 20% increase in Venezuela’s output—currently at 1 million barrels per day—within months.
  • Strict Oversight: All contracts must follow U.S. law, and any payments to sanctioned entities must be funneled into a U.S.-overseen fund.
  • Limitations: The permit does not allow for the formation of new joint ventures, focusing instead on revitalizing existing infrastructure and production capabilities.

Tragedy in Canada: 9 Killed in British Columbia Shooting

A horrific shooting spree has left nine people dead and dozens wounded in the community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that the attacks occurred at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a second nearby location.

  • Casualties: In addition to the fatalities, 27 others were wounded, with two individuals currently in critical condition after being airlifted to a regional hospital.
  • The Suspect: The suspected shooter was found dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted injury.
  • Community in Mourning: All remaining students and staff were safely evacuated, but the town remains in shock as investigators work to determine a motive. Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Poilievre described the event as a “senseless act of violence that has shattered a peaceful community.”
