Dominica – Calls for Tougher Firearms Laws
Dominica’s Attorney General, Levi Peter, is urging stricter firearm legislation, following the fatal shooting of 32-year-old John Yeas Alex Bruno in July. Peter said the government should build on its already strengthened Firearms Act by increasing penalties and ensuring they are enforced. He also encouraged citizens to support the ongoing gun amnesty to help remove illegal weapons from communities. Bruno was killed and two others were injured when gunmen opened fire in the village of Lat while the victims waited for transport to work.
Caribbean – Climate Finance Platform in Development
The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has launched stakeholder consultations with representatives from 14 CARICOM member states to advance a landmark climate action initiative. The proposed Regional Platform for Catalyzing Climate Action in the Caribbean (RP Caribbean) aims to unlock climate financing for the energy and transport sectors. The plan, first announced by Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, will be submitted to the Green Climate Fund by September 2025 and is expected to address barriers to large-scale climate action across the region.
International – EU Warns Against Redrawing Ukraine Borders
European leaders have issued a warning against any attempt to change Ukraine’s borders by force, just days before a planned summit in Alaska between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. The joint statement, signed by 26 of 27 EU leaders, emphasized Ukraine’s right to self-determination and the principle of territorial integrity. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán did not sign, maintaining his friendly stance toward Russia. Reports suggest Trump’s peace proposal could involve Russia retaining Crimea and the Donbas region in exchange for withdrawing from Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
