In Jamaica, Prime Minister-designate Dr. Andrew Holness has praised supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) for delivering a third consecutive historic victory over the People’s National Party (PNP).
The JLP secured 34 of the 63 seats in the House of Representatives. Addressing jubilant supporters at Belmont Road on Wednesday night, Holness described the win as hard-fought, not a default outcome:
“This was not an easy victory. It was a disciplined fight. Some claim that being re-elected threatens democracy, but today proves otherwise. The majority of voters chose Jamaica.”
In Barbados, the country’s 24-hour mental health hotline has logged more than 6,500 calls since its launch in February 2024, with 40% coming from children and teens.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kenneth George revealed the figures during a youth-focused forum on suicide prevention ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day. He noted that mental health needs in Barbados have doubled since the pandemic, stressing the urgency for services that are affordable, accessible, and culturally sensitive.
And internationally, the fashion world is mourning the passing of legendary Italian designer Giorgio Armani, who has died at the age of 91.
Armani, credited with propelling Italy onto the global fashion stage and dressing Hollywood’s elite, founded his company five decades ago and built it into a brand generating €2.3 billion annually.
In a statement, the Armani Group said with “infinite sorrow” it announces the passing of its “creator, founder, and tireless driving force.”
