HGP NIGHTLY NEWS – Hana Mohamed is calling on supporters across Guyana to take to the streets in peaceful protest over what she alleges is the inhumane treatment of Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed at the Lusignan Prison.
In a statement on Saturday, Hana urged supporters to assemble at the Magistrate’s Court at 9 a.m. Monday as she accused the government of political persecution and demanded intervention over her brother’s detention.
She alleged that Mohamed is being isolated in a poorly ventilated cell, kept under continuous lighting and restricted in his ability to exercise or interact with other prisoners.
Hana also raised concerns following a brief visit with her brother Saturday morning.
She claimed that Mohamed’s hands and ankles were swollen and bruised from what she described as tight handcuffs and ankle shackles.
Those allegations have not been independently verified.
Concerns were also raised about Mohamed’s ability to maintain religious dietary requirements while incarcerated.
Hana said her brother, who is Muslim, indicated that he would refuse prison meals unless arrangements were made for his family to provide suitable food.
She also questioned the level of privacy afforded to him while bathing.
Mohamed was remanded to prison until November 24 following his appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on October 30 in connection with charges stemming from the investigation into the alleged unauthorised disclosure of government surveillance footage.
Hana also questioned the circumstances surrounding his transfer from the Kitty Police Station to prison, alleging that his relatives and attorneys were not notified beforehand while a High Court challenge concerning his detention was underway.
She is now calling for wider scrutiny of conditions throughout Guyana’s prison system, including healthcare, sanitation and prisoners’ access to attorneys and relatives.
Hana maintained that humane treatment and equal application of the law should concern Guyanese regardless of their political affiliation.
