Gov’t to Launch New Tech-Driven Program to Combat Violence Against Women

The Government of Guyana is set to roll out a new, technology-driven initiative aimed at tackling gender-based violence, especially violence against women. This was announced by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during his keynote address at the graduation ceremony for 580 master’s degree recipients under the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) on Monday.

“In the coming days, I’ll be launching a new program for women… we will be using technology to its fullest,” the Head of State stated.

Although full details have not yet been disclosed, the President emphasized that the program will play a crucial role in strengthening prevention and support systems for victims of abuse.

The announcement comes amid alarming statistics. According to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, over 1,800 cases of domestic and gender-based violence were recorded nationwide in 2024. The ministry has set a goal to reduce this number to 1,700 in 2025.

In addition to reporting and response mechanisms, 26 victims of domestic violence and sexual offenses were given shelter services last year. Plans are underway to expand this assistance to reach more victims in 2025.

The Ministry has also outlined a broader strategy to combat gender-based violence, which includes:

  • Strengthening anti-discrimination and anti-violence policies
  • Providing shelter and financial support to vulnerable women
  • Promoting gender equality through policy and education
  • Expanding rehabilitation for at-risk youth and offenders

The new program is expected to complement these strategies by leveraging digital tools to improve victim outreach, safety, and access to services.

More details are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
