FINAL RALLY: ‘$5,000 GAS AND $180 EGGS’; FERNANDES HIGHLIGHTS HIGH COST OF LIVING IN HINTERLAND

Georgetown, Guyana – August 30, 2025 – Two days before Guyanese head to the polls, Prime Ministerial Candidate Juretha Fernandes of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) delivered a spirited address at the Square of the Revolution, urging voters to “make it right on Monday.” Speaking before thousands of supporters and an even larger online audience, Fernandes emphasized the struggles ordinary citizens face under the current administration and pledged that an APNU government would deliver relief.

“You have endured as a people, you have struggled as a people, you have faced disrespect as a people, you have faced discrimination,” she declared. “But it is all about to end come Monday. We are heading to the polls, and we are voting like the bosses. We are voting at the top, we are voting at the bottom. We are electing Aubrey Norton as the leader of this country.”

Much of Fernandes’ speech drew from her campaign trail experiences, particularly in hinterland communities where residents, she said, are bearing the brunt of high living costs.

In Embamadai, Upper Mazaruni, she claimed, gasoline sells for $5,000 a gallon while a single bottle of cooking gas costs $15,000. In Jawala, also in the Upper Mazaruni, she recounted how one egg could cost as much as $180.

“This is the country under the PPP administration,” she said, to loud jeers from the crowd. “They cannot help but dig into your pocket by not putting policies in place to remedy these things. But I say to you tonight that come Monday, this will change.”

Fernandes told supporters that the APNU team was welcomed “with total love” in every hinterland community they visited. Residents, she said, embraced APNU’s “people-centered development” because they saw it as the only path to better lives.

“There is no place that we went where they did not hug us, embrace us, welcome the policies,” she recalled. “They understand that these are the things that will benefit them as a people.”

Fernandes called on voters to see the election not only as a personal choice but as a collective duty to the nation.

“When we step into the polls, we must understand that we are not just doing this for ourselves, but we are doing this for the entire Guyana,” she said. “We are going to be uniting our voices, we are going to be uniting our votes.”

She promised that an APNU administration would act to moderate the prices of basic goods in remote areas, ensuring that hinterland residents no longer face “exorbitant costs.”

Fernandes also defended the qualifications of the APNU leadership, taking a jab at her opponents.

“Like my colleague Mr. Duncan said, we didn’t go to ‘Uitvlugt University.’ We went to real universities, and we have real certificates,” she declared, drawing laughter and applause. “And we will make sure that your lives are better.”

Throughout her address, Fernandes struck a tone of confidence, insisting that Guyana stood on the brink of change.

“We got this, Georgetown, we got this Guyana,” she said, raising her voice above the cheering crowd. “We are gonna make it right on Monday. We making it right.”
