Forward Guyana Movement Pushes for End to Winner-Takes-All Politics

The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) has outlined its bold commitment to ending Guyana’s long-standing winner-takes-all political system, pledging to pursue constitutional reform that guarantees shared power and true representation.
FGM Presidential Candidate Amanza Walton-Desir stressed that the current system allows 51% of the vote to control 100% of decision-making, a structure she described as the root of political instability.
“There’s nothing that cannot be fixed if we fix this winner-takes-all system. If 51% of the vote no longer means 100% of the say, then all Guyanese will have a real voice in shaping our future,” Walton-Desir declared.
The coalition’s governance plan calls for:
- Power sharing across major groups to foster inclusivity and national unity.
- Expanded voter choice to reduce fear, tribal loyalty, and political polarization.
- Independent election management, transforming GECOM into a non-partisan, technical body.
- Stricter controls to prevent ineligible voting and electoral abuse.
- Outlawing intimidation to protect the rights of voters and candidates.
FGM argues these reforms will restore confidence in Guyana’s democracy, ensure fair elections, and create a system where all citizens—regardless of race, background, or party affiliation—can participate without fear of victimization.
