SOPHIA, GEORGETOWN โ The landscape of education in the Sophia community saw a major upgrade on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, as Minister of Education Sonia Parag officially commissioned a new $233 million wing at the Sophia Primary School. The state-of-the-art expansion is a direct response to the rapid growth of the community, aimed at ending years of classroom congestion and providing a modernized space for both pupils and educators.
The project represents a significant portion of the governmentโs 2026 educational capital expenditure, focused on bringing high-quality school facilities directly into developing neighborhoods.
Inside the $233M Expansion
The newly commissioned wing was designed to be a self-contained hub of learning, significantly boosting the school’s total capacity. The facility includes:
- Nine New Classrooms: Outfitted with modern ventilation and lighting to create a conducive learning environment.
- Modern Auditorium: A versatile space for school assemblies, cultural events, and community gatherings.
- Administrative Suite: A dedicated new office for the Headteacher.
- Sanitary Facilities: Two new washroom blocks designed for high-capacity use.
Education as a Community Anchor
During the commissioning ceremony, Minister Parag emphasized that the investment goes beyond just “concrete and steel,” framing the school as a pillar of community stability.
- Accessibility: The Minister noted that the expansion ensures Sophia parents no longer have to struggle with long distances or “out-of-zone” placements to secure a spot for their children.
- The 100-School Milestone: Parag highlighted that this project is part of a massive national drive that has seen more than 100 schools constructed or commissioned across Guyana over the past five years.
- Legacy and Responsibility: Addressing the students directly, the Minister remarked, “You are the ones who have to leave the legacy for the next generation that will be going through these hallways.”
A Call for Discipline and Maintenance
While celebrating the new infrastructure, the Minister issued a stern reminder to the school board, parents, and students about the importance of facility management.
- Environmental Care: She urged the Sophia community to take pride in and “care for what we have,” ensuring the building remains a pristine asset for years to come.
- Student Agency: Parag reminded pupils that classroom instruction is only one part of the equation, stating that discipline, curiosity, and personal effort are the final ingredients needed to maximize their potential.
Paving the Way for the “Smart Country”
The commissioning of the Sophia Primary wing aligns with the administration’s broader “Smart Country” vision, which seeks to pair modernized physical spaces with enhanced technology and teacher training. As the Sophia community continues to expand, this $233M investment ensures that the neighborhoodโs children aren’t just attending school, but are doing so in an environment that reflects the nation’s growing prosperity.
