DEATH THREAT AGAINST CANU BOSS TRACED OUTSIDE GUYANA

HGP Nightly News – A death threat against Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit Director James Singh has been traced outside Guyana, drawing local law-enforcement agencies and international partners into the investigation.

Authorities suspect the threat originated from a Spanish-speaking criminal group operating out of Venezuela, Singh told reporters on the sidelines of an event.

Investigators have not publicly identified the group, disclosed how the threat was delivered or said whether they believe an attack was imminent.

Singh said the cross-border nature of the case has made international cooperation necessary. Communication with Venezuela remains limited, however, creating an immediate obstacle for investigators attempting to identify the people behind the threat.

The CANU director declined to connect the threat to any specific drug seizure or recent operation. He nevertheless revealed that approximately 90 per cent of the cocaine seized in Guyana last year had entered through Venezuela.

The narcotics were largely produced in Colombia, he said, but investigators found that Venezuela was their final transit point before they reached Guyana.

Several Venezuelan nationals have also been arrested in connection with major cocaine seizures.

That trafficking pattern places the threat in a troubling context, though no direct link has been established. If the people responsible are operating outside Guyana, tracing them and determining how much reach they have inside the country, may prove difficult.

Guyana’s long border with Venezuela, remote communities and extensive network of rivers create openings that traffickers can exploit. Those same conditions make surveillance and interception more demanding for local authorities.

The threat against Singh also raises a broader concern: whether transnational drug networks are becoming bold enough to target senior Guyanese law-enforcement officials personally.

For now, investigators have disclosed little about the credibility or exact origin of the threat. The joint investigation remains active.
