DEADLY TURN: POLICE PROBE FATAL CRASH AS LORRY DRIVER REMAINS IN CUSTODY

HGP Nightly News – 64-year-old man is dead and a lorry driver is in police custody following a horrific collision Tuesday afternoon on the Cornelia Ida Public Road, West Coast Demerara.

Roy Chanka, a resident of Cornelia Ida, was operating an electric cycle shortly before 2 p.m. when his vehicle was struck by a motor lorry traveling in the same direction. According to police, both vehicles were heading west along the southern carriageway when the lorry, driven by a 42-year-old man from Friendship, East Bank Demerara, attempted to turn south into the Cornelia Ida Access Road. During the manoeuvre, the front left wheel of the truck collided with Chanka’s cycle.

The impact was devastating. Chanka was thrown violently onto the roadway, sustaining severe injuries from which he did not recover. His body has been transported to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to officially determine the cause of death.

Investigators have moved quickly to piece together the moments leading up to the tragedy. CCTV footage from the area has been obtained and reviewed, providing authorities with a visual record of the incident. A breathalyser test administered to the lorry driver returned negative for alcohol consumption.

The driver remains in custody as the investigation continues. No charges have been filed at this stage. For the family of Roy Chanka, the questions linger, and the loss is permanent.
