DAY 36 ELECTION FRAUD TRIAL…VIDEO INTERVIEW WITH FORMER HEALTH MINISTER VOLDA LAWRENCE PLAYED IN COURT

The high-profile Election Fraud Trial resumed on Wednesday before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, as the proceedings entered Day 36 with new evidence being presented.

A key highlight of the day’s hearing was the court’s viewing of a video-recorded interview with former Minister of Health Volda Lawrence, who exercised her right to remain silent during questioning by police investigators.

Videographer Testifies on Lawrence’s Interview

During the afternoon session, Police Corporal Troy Henry, a videographer attached to the Guyana Police Force, testified that on October 13, 2020, he was instructed by the Major Crimes Unit to conduct a video-recorded interview with Lawrence, who was accompanied by her attorney, Nigel Hughes.

The recording, later played in court, captured investigators posing several questions to the former minister — all of which went unanswered, as Lawrence chose to remain silent throughout the session.

Earlier in the day, Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police Kamar Patama continued his testimony during the voir dire (trial within a trial) and was subsequently cross-examined by the defense.

Trial to Resume October 30

The matter is expected to continue on October 30, 2025, when Superintendent Mitchell Caesar is set to return to the witness stand.

The ongoing proceedings stem from investigations into the March 2020 General and Regional Elections, during which several former officials of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and others were accused of conspiring to manipulate the election results.

In total, 19 conspiracy charges have been filed in relation to the alleged electoral fraud. The prosecution has indicated that it intends to call approximately 73 witnesses before the trial concludes.
