DAY 31 – ELECTION FRAUD TRIAL…KANHAI ADMITS HE WAS ARRESTED FOR BREAKING INTO GECOM CHAIR’S ROOM AMID ELECTIONS TENSIONS

Day 31 of the Election Fraud Trial on Friday brought key revelations from Dr. Daniel Josh Kanhai, the current Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, who admitted under oath that he was arrested in March 2020 after forcing his way into the room occupied by GECOM Chair, Justice Claudette Singh.

Kanhai testified that on March 5, 2020, at the height of Guyana’s disputed General and Regional Elections, he entered the restricted space despite knowing that a formal recount request had already been delivered and acknowledged by the Elections Commission.

The witness’s admission shed new light on the tense days following the controversial polls, when multiple parties challenged the vote tabulation and tensions boiled over into confrontations at the Ashmins Building Command Center.

Kanhai confirmed that his actions led to his arrest by law enforcement officials, a fact that prosecutors highlighted to underscore the chaotic environment that plagued the 2020 elections.

The trial, which is examining 19 conspiracy charges against former GECOM officials and political operatives accused of attempting to rig the results, has so far heard testimony from multiple police officers, forensic experts, and election officials.

The case continues before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, with the prosecution expected to call more witnesses in the coming days.
