COPS BUSTED IN AIRPORT EXTORTION SCANDAL – BODY CAMERAS NOW MANDATORY

Timehri, Guyana – September 29, 2025 – A corruption scandal has rocked the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), after officers of the Guyana Police Force were accused of shaking down a passenger for cash in exchange for releasing her lawful belongings.

According to officials, CCTV footage and other evidence back the shocking claim. The implicated officers are now under close arrest, while the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) digs into the extortion probe.

The fallout has triggered sweeping action: from September 29, 2025, every law enforcement officer operating at airports and border points will be required to wear body cameras, a move the government says will help stamp out corruption and restore public trust.

The GPF has drawn a hard line, declaring zero tolerance for bribery and extortion. The public is being urged to push back against shakedowns, with a sharp reminder: you do not need to pay to clear lawful items at CJIA or anywhere else in Guyana.
