JAWALLA, REGION SEVEN — The construction of the New Jawalla Secondary School is nearing the finish line, with the Ministry of Education confirming the facility is on track for a handover ahead of the new academic year. Minister of Education Sonia Parag recently conducted a site inspection in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni region, expressing satisfaction with the rapid advancement of the $231.9 million project.

The school is a critical component of the government’s strategy to achieve universal secondary education, specifically targeting the unique needs of hinterland communities.

A Milestone for Hinterland Education

The project, which saw its sod-turning in 2024, was awarded to Sheriff Construction. Once operational, it will fundamentally change the educational landscape for the Upper Mazaruni.

  • Ending Overcrowding: The facility is designed to cater to 250 students, providing a dedicated secondary environment for those transitioning from “Primary Top” levels.
  • Modern Amenities: Moving beyond basic classrooms, the school will be a fully equipped hub for science and technology, featuring:
    • Specialized Labs: Dedicated spaces for Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and IT.
    • Vocational Training: TVET laboratories and a Home Economics room.
    • Student Support: A library, spacious classrooms, and a small dormitory.
  • Teacher Welfare: The inclusion of teachers’ quarters on-site ensures that educators have stable housing within the community.

Accelerating Toward the Finish Line

Accompanied by Mr. Marti De Souza, Deputy Chief Education Officer for Amerindian and Hinterland Education Development, Minister Parag urged the contractor to maintain momentum during the final phase of construction.

  • Satisfactory Progress: Despite the logistical challenges of building in Region Seven, the Minister noted significant advancement in recent months.
  • Final Touches: While some finishing works remain, Minister Parag assured regional officials that measures are in place to ensure the project meets its eight-month completion target.
  • September Ready: The goal is to have the school fully operational for the start of the 2026/2027 academic year.
