CANU OPERATION IN LETHEM NETS OVER 2KG SUSPECTED CANNABIS, 65G SUSPECTED ECSTASY

HGP Nightly News – CANU ranks say an intelligence-led operation in Region Nine has resulted in the seizure of suspected narcotics, uncustomed goods and several motorcycles later confirmed as stolen in Brazil, after officers executed searches on Tuesday at Tabatinga, Lethem.

According to CANU, the operation began with ranks searching a clump of bushes opposite a premises occupied by Marlon Jarvis. During that search, officers reportedly found multiple zip-lock bags containing suspected cannabis. A man who identified himself as Alim Kartel was detained at the location and questioned.

CANU said information obtained during that interaction led officers to seek entry to the nearby premises, but the occupant reportedly refused to allow a search. Investigators then secured a search warrant from the Lethem Magistrates’ Court.

With assistance from the Guyana Fire Service, ranks gained access to a two-storey building and a concrete shop within the compound. Inside the shop, CANU reported finding suspected cannabis packaged in zip-lock bags, empty zip-lock bags, digital scales and a quantity of uncustomed liquor.

A search of the two-storey building later uncovered additional uncustomed liquor, along with pink-coloured pills suspected to be ecstasy or MDMA, several currencies and a quantity of yellow metal, the agency said.

In another section of the yard, officers reportedly discovered more suspected cannabis and four motorcycles. CANU said those motorcycles were later confirmed to have been reported stolen in Brazil.

No one was present at the premises at the time of the search, CANU noted, adding that the operation was recorded using body-worn cameras. Officers from the Guyana Revenue Authority were subsequently called to the scene and took possession of the uncustomed liquor.

CANU said Jarvis later arrived at the premises, was cautioned, arrested and escorted to the Lethem Police Station along with the suspected narcotics and other items seized.

At the station, the suspected narcotics were weighed. CANU reported seizures of more than two kilograms of suspected cannabis and sixty-five grams of suspected ecstasy. Several currencies were also counted in the presence of the suspect, including Guyana dollars, US dollars, Brazilian reais and other foreign denominations.

Both Marlon Jarvis and Alim Kartel were taken into custody as investigations continue.
