Parliament has approved budgetary allocations for the Office of the Prime Minister, the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, and the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance as deliberations on the 2026 National Budget continue.

The Office of the Prime Minister has been allocated $111,396,757 for 2026. Included in this sum is $13,276,007 earmarked specifically for the energy sector. According to the Budget Estimates for Current and Capital Expenditure for the year 2026, the targeted funding is intended to support the development and implementation of key energy policies.

A major priority under this allocation is the expansion of the hinterland electrification programme, which aims to bring reliable electricity to remote and underserved communities. The budget also provides for the oversight and management of power generation facilities, a critical component of maintaining efficient and reliable energy services nationwide, particularly amid ongoing power outages.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips addressed the Parliamentary Committee of Supply on Monday, confirming that 716,261 individuals are budgeted to receive the second installment of the government’s $100,000 cash grant. The disclosure came in response to questions from Vinceroy Jordan, an opposition member.

Prime Minister Phillips explained that the provision supports the Government of Guyana’s relief interventions, including a one-off cash grant of $72.5 billion. When asked how many citizens the provision caters to, the Prime Minister stated that, for planning purposes, the government is targeting 716,261 persons.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance was allocated $675,819, an amount which was also approved. The funding is intended to support governance functions essential to Parliament’s effective operation and the promotion of good governance practices, which in turn facilitate the implementation of national policies.

Additionally, the Office of the Leader of the Opposition received an approved allocation of approximately $34 million under the 2026 budget.

The approvals form part of the wider examination of state spending priorities as lawmakers continue to scrutinise allocations across government offices and ministries during the budget process.
