Backup Vocalist Ruth English-Wilson Releases Debut Single “Mirror Mirror”

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Known for her melodious tone as a well-regarded backup vocalist and former radio personality, Ruth English-Wilson has made a bold, inspiring leap into the solo music scene with the release of her debut single, “Mirror Mirror.” Launched in observance of Guyana’s upcoming 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee, the soulful singer-songwriter underscores the significance of divine timing in a creative journey marked by unwavering faith, determination, and raw perseverance.

For years, English-Wilson’s vocal textures have graced the tracking of prominent regional gospel musicians. Now, she emerges from the background to claim center stage.

“There are people out there who always believed that I was meant for something greater, always believed that I was meant to do this and come forward from behind the scenes,” English-Wilson shared in an exclusive sit-down with HGP Nightly News. “There are still people who see you as a threat. It doesn’t matter what you try to do; they will try their best to keep you down. But you just have to keep praying for those people… you have to block out the noise.”

Her defiance of industry skepticism stems from childhood discouragement. “I was once told as a child, ‘Get your head out of the clouds, it’s not going to happen, look for a nine-to-five, because music doesn’t pay in Guyana.’ I’m not kidding you,” she recalled. “But I believe everything happens for a purpose. Being in the background allowed me to see what’s going on in the forefront, and I realized that’s not the path I want to take.”

More than a conventional solo debut, “Mirror Mirror” is structured as a patriotic anthem celebrating Guyana’s multi-ethnic cultural tapestry. The song’s foundations trace back nearly a decade, to her brother, veteran gospel artist Shawn English, who wrote it for a Black Gold Entertainment hip-hop poetry slam. He paired his patriotic lyricism with a jazz-reggae instrumental track, sending the demo to his sister to add her signature vocal spin.

Though structural hurdles and funding delays sidelined the track for nine years, financial windows opened in December, sending English-Wilson straight into Paradigm Audio Lab to finalize production by January.

“If you listen to the words, it is a beautiful song. I want it to start strong, something that is going to bring everybody together,” she explained. “Take a look in the mirror and tell me what you see. Sometimes we tend to forget our culture, artistry, uniqueness—the culture, the food, the dress, the fact that we are six people who can celebrate together. The song reminds us to be proud, despite the challenges we face.”

Looking toward the future, English-Wilson rejects the industry trend of gatekeeping technical knowledge, stating her five-year vision includes releasing multiple studio albums while actively establishing mentorship frameworks for young, emerging Guyanese vocalists.

Addressing the unique financial strains faced by gospel ministers in an industry heavily dominated by secular sounds, she urged faith-based creatives to remain anchored. “When your focus is on fame and money without God, it won’t last,” she affirmed. “God is not a God of failure. Don’t fail Him by giving up. Keep pushing.”

“Mirror Mirror” is now universally accessible on Spotify, YouTube, Tidal, Amazon Music, Audiomack, and over 27 additional global digital streaming applications.
