Speaking on the program Sources, Ganesh Mahipaul, Vice Presidential candidate for the Partnership for National Unity (APNU), declared his party’s commitment to tackling corruption, which he described as a long-standing burden on governance.
Mahipaul emphasized that accountability, transparency, and good governance are central to his vision. He explained that his proposals for stronger oversight systems have already been included in APNU’s manifesto, stressing that no government should single-handedly control key structures.
“We ought to have stronger systems and stronger structures in place,” Mahipaul said, adding that his party is prepared to root out corruption wherever it appears.
He argued that given Guyana’s close electoral margins—where the ruling party often secures just over 50% of the vote—the opposition must be included in major decision-making. Mahipaul called for opposition seats on the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board as well as the Guyana Oil Company (GuyOil) board to ensure fairness and accountability.
When pressed about the controversial Durban Park project, which critics have described as rife with alleged corruption, Mahipaul distanced himself, stating he was not involved at the national level during the 2015–2020 period when contracts were issued.
APNU officially rolled out its 2025 manifesto last Friday, highlighting corruption reform as a top priority. The party insists that reducing corruption will save taxpayer dollars and redirect more resources back to the people.
