GEORGETOWN – The political mudslinging over regional power has intensified, with APNU Member Ganesh Mahipaul fiercely denying explosive claims that the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) struck any secret alliance with the ruling PPP/C during the recent, contentious Regional Democratic Council (RDC) elections. Mahipaul branded the accusations of collusion as “false and misleading,” asserting that the opposition’s embarrassing defeats were due to its own disunity, not deliberate cooperation with the government.
Speaking on the program Nation Watch with host Eden Corbin, Mahipaul offered a point-by-point defense of APNU’s actions, maintaining that they were consistent with the party’s long-standing principles.
The Finger Pointed at WIN
Mahipaul laid the blame for the failures in both Region Four and the traditional APNU stronghold of Region Ten squarely on the lack of unified opposition action, particularly involving the newcomer We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Party.
In the case of Region Four, Mahipaul claimed the opposition bloc had more than enough collective votes to secure both the Chairman and Vice Chairman positions. The PPP/C’s victory, he asserted, was simply a gift: WIN councillors inexplicably withdrew from participation, effectively handing the posts to the ruling party.
In Region Ten, where a hotly contested election ended in a 9–9 tie between APNU’s Dominique Blair and WIN’s Mark Goring, Mahipaul claimed the deadlock arose because some WIN councillors reportedly broke ranks, allowing the PPP/C to strategically vote to influence the outcome. He added that APNU’s decision to nominate its own candidate was fueled by growing “mistrust” after WIN unilaterally refused to collaborate in negotiations ahead of the vote.
Lesson Learned?
The MP emphasized the absolute absence of any understanding between APNU and the PPP/C, arguing that the opposition’s inability to coordinate in these critical regions must serve as a harsh lesson for the future.
Mahipaul reiterated APNU’s commitment to rebuilding trust and strengthening the opposition’s collective voice, urging supporters to reject the “misinformation.” His statement confirms that the Opposition is not only fractured but also publicly trading accusations over who is responsible for the political chaos that benefited the ruling party.
