Former AFC Youth Leader Defects to APNU, Denounces Sabotage of Coalition Politics

Georgetown, Guyana — Former Youth for Change President and once-prominent Alliance For Change (AFC) member, Dylan Mohamed, has officially resigned from the AFC and joined A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), citing internal divisions and what he called a sabotage of coalition politics.
In an exclusive interview with HGP Nightly News, Mohamed expressed that his decision was rooted in principle and the need to maintain the integrity of coalition efforts to unseat the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).
“Due to the circumstances—what I believe to be a sabotage of the coalition agreement—I decided to resign from the AFC and come with the APNU because I am a firm believer in coalition politics,” Mohamed stated.
Call for Unity Against PPP/C
Mohamed, who identifies as a social democrat, argued that many Guyanese are disillusioned by what he called the “dictatorship and capitalistic ideology” of the current administration. He believes coalition unity is the only viable path to removing the PPP/C from power.
“If the only way to remove the PPP is through a coalition, then any effort to sabotage the coalition is not something for me to be a part of,” he added.
He also disclosed that several other youth members have resigned from the AFC, including Onyx Duncan, who is now contesting as a candidate under the APNU banner.
Youth Momentum and Grassroots Engagement
According to Mohamed, the APNU campaign has gained momentum, especially among young people who are “intensely involved in groundwork and mobilization.” He described the movement as youthful, energetic, and policy-driven.
A former Queen’s College scholar and Civil Aviation Authority employee, Mohamed said his political awakening began after witnessing serious inefficiencies in the aviation sector, particularly under what he described as the politically influenced management aligned with the PPP.
“There were glaring loopholes in the system, and I saw the efforts of the former APNU+AFC government to correct them in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). That inspired me,” he recalled.
Policy Interests and Vision
Mohamed expressed strong interest in mental health advocacy, economic empowerment, and addressing unemployment, especially among youth. He believes that under a seven-party coalition government, the APNU can lead transformative change.
“Every Guyanese must benefit,” he said, emphasizing the coalition’s renewed commitment to inclusive development.
New Faces, New Direction
Despite recent high-profile crossovers from APNU to the PPP and other emerging parties, Mohamed believes the coalition is rejuvenated and future-ready, pointing to the youthful composition of its current national candidate list.
“We are offering a fresh vision with competent, young leaders ready to govern,” he concluded.
