AFC LEADER RESPONDS AS MEMBERS EXITING AHEAD OF 2025 ELECTIONS

AFC Faces Trio of Resignations Ahead of September 1 Elections

As Guyana prepares for general and regional elections on September 1, the Alliance For Change (AFC) is confronting internal challenges with the resignation of three members, each of whom has now publicly thrown their support behind rival political forces.

In a telephone interview with HGP Nightly News, AFC Leader Khemraj Ramjattan acknowledged the departures and expressed appreciation for the contributions made by the former members.

“Whenever a long-standing member departs the AFC, we always express appreciation for their contributions,” Ramjattan said. “The loss of a member always diminishes the party—even if they were no longer very active.”

He further noted that the party takes time to reflect on the causes behind each resignation and is open to learning from the feedback provided, particularly when reasons are made public.

“If they’re kind enough to publish their reasons, we will analyze that and take it into account to strengthen the party going forward,” he added.

Among those who resigned is Ismal Muhammad Al-Kush, an AFC-aligned Region Five councilor, who has now publicly endorsed President Dr. Irfaan Ali and the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C). Al-Kush cited “internal rambling” within the AFC as a key reason for his departure.

Also exiting the party is David Daniels, the AFC’s Region Seven Chairman and a founder of the Small Miners Association, who announced his support for the PPP/C and President Ali just last week.

Completing the trio is Region Ten Vice-Chairman Mark Goring, who has also stepped away from the AFC.

These high-profile defections occur at a sensitive time for the AFC, as the party seeks to solidify its campaign footing in the lead-up to what is expected to be a highly contested election.
