AFC DROPS FERNANDES, DUNCAN, AND RAMSAROOP AFTER ALIGNING WITH APNU

AFC Terminates Membership of Three Members Who Joined APNU List for Upcoming Elections

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — The Alliance For Change (AFC) has officially terminated the membership of three of its prominent members — Juretha Fernandes, Sherod Duncan, and Ricky Ramsaroop — after they signed on to the list of candidates for the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) to contest the September 1 General and Regional Elections.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the AFC announced that the trio’s decision to align with another political organization constituted an automatic forfeiture of membership, as outlined in the party’s constitution and principles.

Fernandes Tipped as Prime Ministerial Candidate

Notably, Juretha Fernandes is being tipped as APNU’s prime ministerial candidate, signaling a major political shift ahead of the highly anticipated elections. This move further complicates the opposition landscape and appears to underscore deepening divisions among opposition groups.

AFC: Coalition Proposal Rejected Despite Major Concessions

The AFC revealed that it had submitted a revised coalition proposal to APNU on May 17, 2025, significantly reducing its demand for seats and positions from 65% to 35% in hopes of maintaining a united front.

Despite what the AFC describes as “significant concessions”—including granting APNU nearly all of what was requested—the party said it received no meaningful response, indicating that APNU remains uninterested in entering into a coalition agreement.

“We acted in good faith to respond to public calls for a unified opposition,” the AFC noted. “But it is now evident that APNU was and remains uninterested.”

AFC Still Open to Collaboration

With Nomination Day (July 14) fast approaching, the AFC says it remains open to coalition-building efforts, but stressed that any future alliances must be built on mutual respect and transparency.
