GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Mother’s Day in the capital is set to be a grand affair as the National Cultural Centre prepares to host the ninth edition of “A Treat For My Mother.” Organized by Purple Arts Productions and directed by veteran dramatist Simone Dowding, the event has solidified its place as a cornerstone of Guyana’s cultural calendar.
Speaking exclusively to Nightly News, Dowding revealed that this year’s production aims to bridge the generational gap, offering a “polished, family-friendly experience” that honors motherhood through a blend of nostalgia and modern Guyanese talent.
A Star-Studded Cultural Lineup
The production features an eclectic mix of live performances, spanning singing, dancing, and poetry. The 2026 roster boasts some of the most recognizable names in local entertainment:
- Veterans of the Stage: Performers include Charmaine Blackman, Sean Bhola, and Bonny Alves, ensuring a night of high-energy music and classic Guyanese sounds.
- Diverse Talent: The program also features Calvin Burnett, Sheron Cadogan, Barbara Lee, Eion Nelson, and Ronald Green, providing a rich tapestry of vocal and poetic tributes.
- The Theme: Approaching its milestone tenth year, the show continues to focus on the emotional and social significance of mothers within the Guyanese family structure.
Unprecedented Prizes: From Georgetown to the Big Apple
In a major upgrade for the ninth edition, the event has partnered with corporate sponsors to offer door prizes that exceed all previous years.
- The Grand Prizes: For the first time in the show’s history, attendees stand a chance to win trips to New York City.
- Local Wonders: A trip to the iconic Kaieteur Falls is also up for grabs, highlighting the beauty of the Guyanese interior.
- Flexibility: Sponsored by Muneshwers Travel Service, the tickets come with a six-month validity, allowing winners ample time to plan their getaways.
A Community Celebration
The ninth edition of “A Treat For My Mother” is designed to be accessible to all, with Dowding emphasizing that high production values do not have to mean exclusionary pricing. With tickets starting at $2,500 and robust support from the business community—including Republic Bank, Voice FM 96.1, and Essential Care Pharmacy—the evening promises to be a seamless and memorable tribute to the matriarchs of Guyana.
As the curtains rise at 8:00 PM on Mother’s Day, the National Cultural Centre will once again become a sanctuary of song and gratitude.
