SOPHIA, GEORGETOWN — A Tuesday afternoon that began like any other ended in tragedy for a Sophia family after a fast-moving blaze leveled their home at Lot 474 A Field. The fire has left four people displaced, including homeowner Cheryl Innis, who says decades of hard work and cherished memories were reduced to ash in mere moments.
A Devastating Call at Work
For Cheryl Innis, a staff member at a nearby primary school, the news came as a sudden, heart-wrenching shock.
- The Alert: Innis was on duty when a frantic message reached her that smoke was billowing from her residence.
- Total Loss: By the time she could race to the scene, the fire had already taken full control of the structure. “The blaze had already engulfed the building, destroying everything inside,” she recounted, visibly shaken by the speed of the destruction.
- Empty Home: Fortunately, no one was inside the house when the fire started, preventing any potential loss of life or physical injury.
Suspected Cause: Electrical Malfunction
While the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has launched a formal investigation to pinpoint the exact origin, early signs point to a technical failure.
- Suspected Origin: Preliminary assessments suggest the fire may have been electrical in origin.
- Containment: Firefighters arrived promptly on the scene and were praised for their quick action, which successfully prevented the inferno from spreading to neighboring homes in the tightly packed A Field section of Sophia.
A Plea for Help
Cheryl Innis is now facing the daunting task of starting over from scratch. With no clothing, documents, or household items remaining, she is turning to the generosity of the Guyanese public.
“I am left with nothing… I am appealing to the public for assistance as I begin the difficult process of rebuilding my life.” — Cheryl Innis

Rebuilding from the Ashes
The fire at A Field is a sobering reminder of how quickly a lifetime of stability can be upended. As the Sophia community rallies around the Innis family, the focus remains on immediate relief. The Guyana Fire Service continues to urge residents to ensure their homes are professionally wired and to avoid overloading electrical circuits, especially as temperatures remain high across the coastland.
