HGP Nightly News – Fifty thousand public servants, teachers, and disciplined services members won’t have to wait much longer. Their $100,000 National Cash Grant is heading directly into their bank accounts by the end of next week.
The Ministry of Finance announced Thursday that central government employees who already receive their salaries through the banking system will be the first to benefit from the grant, with payments scheduled for March 19.
Senior Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh confirmed the timeline, explaining that the first cohort comprises those who have already provided their bank account information to receive their government salaries.
“We anticipate that these government employees will receive their $100,000 cash grant by the end of next week,” Dr. Singh said, adding that subsequent groups of eligible beneficiaries will follow.
The move is part of a broader government push toward digitisation and financial inclusion. By channeling payments through commercial banks, the administration aims to make transfers faster, more secure, and more transparent.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali has been urging citizens to open bank accounts in preparation. “We are digitising everything, so I am urging every Guyanese to open their bank accounts,” the President said. “We want every Guyanese to own their own bank account so that this digital transfer would be easy and efficient and, of course, transparent.”
For those not yet in the banking system, help is on the way. The government will soon launch an online digital platform allowing other eligible citizens to register for the grant. The Ministry of Finance has already been working with commercial banks to simplify account opening, including options for online registration.
Several banks are already facilitating the process, including Demerara Bank Limited, GBTI, Republic Bank, and Scotiabank.
The $100,000 National Cash Grant is part of a wider package of measures aimed at increasing disposable income and expanding access to financial services. The first round of payments in late 2024 saw more than $60 billion transferred to over 600,000 Guyanese aged 18 and older.
This time, the money is coming faster, digitally, and straight into bank accounts. For 50,000 public sector workers, March 19 can’t come soon enough.
