APNU Youth Representation Questioned Amid List of 12 Parliamentary Reps

Amid the announcement of 12 parliamentary representatives for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), criticism has mounted from supporters and political pundits who argue that the slate lacks youthful faces. While names such as Riaz Rupnarain, Ganesh Mahipaul, and saiku Andrews appear on the list, many expected younger activists like Eden Corbin, Ravaldo Birbal, and Ronald Daniels—who were highly visible during the campaign—to be included.
In response, APNU parliamentarian Riaz Rupnarain clarified in an exclusive interview with Nightly News that youthful representation should not be narrowly defined by age.
“Youth is not defined by their birthdays. It is about those who stand up and fight for rights and changes. When we say young people are represented, it is not just about the literal age definition.”
The 35-year-old educator stressed that leadership must focus on serving communities rather than self-interest, adding that effectiveness and maturity matter more than numbers. He argued that his experience allows him to bridge generational gaps and help create a stronger parliamentary force under the stewardship of Dr. Terrence Campbell and the guidance of PNCR Leader Aubrey Norton.
Offering advice to aspiring young politicians, Rupnarain urged them to see politics as an act of service.
“Politics is more altruistic and less selfish. It’s not about what you will get out of it—it’s a customer service job. If you don’t intend to serve the Guyanese people, then you are in the wrong market.”
