WPA Calls for State of Emergency in Guyana’s Security Sector

The Working People’s Alliance (WPA) is intensifying its call for a state of emergency in Guyana’s security sector, citing widespread corruption and bribery that continue to undermine law enforcement efforts.
At a Wednesday morning press conference, WPA Leader Dr. David Hinds declared that the system has reached its breaking point and can no longer be “reformed” with minor adjustments.
“We are not talking about tinkering with the system,” Dr. Hinds said.
“We are talking about an admission that the security system is broken and it has to be completely renovated.”
Referencing the steady stream of drug busts across the country, Dr. Hinds argued that while “people at the bottom” of the illicit trade are often jailed, the real drug kingpins walk free.
He added that as long as corruption remains embedded in Guyana’s security sector, narco-trafficking will remain unsolved.
The 2025 United States International Narcotics Control Strategy Report concluded that Guyana’s battle against entrenched drug trafficking and money laundering is being hampered by corruption involving police, soldiers, and customs officers.
The WPA says this validates its demand for a complete overhaul of the sector.
“Our country is corrupt. Corruption runs deep in society—it starts at the top and permeates all levels. Bribery is a common occurrence in everyday life in Guyana. It’s part of governance,” Dr. Hinds stressed.
In June, six alleged drug traffickers who reportedly used boats and narco-subs to smuggle cocaine were sanctioned by the United States, further spotlighting Guyana’s challenges in combating organized crime.
The WPA insists that only a state of emergency can restore integrity, accountability, and safety to Guyana’s security framework.
