WIN LEADER CLAIMS SCHOOLS IN MICOBIE FORCED TO CLOSE DUE TO LACK OF WATER

Georgetown, September 22, 2025 – Opposition Leader and WIN Leader Azruddin Mohamed is alleging that more than 240 students in Micobie, Region 8, have been left without classes after two schools were forced to close their doors due to a lack of water.

According to Mohamed, reports reaching his party claim that both the Micobie Primary and Nursery Schools were closed on Monday because there was no water available for basic sanitation. He further alleged that the shortage has disrupted flushing toilets, washing hands, cleaning classrooms, and even halted the school feeding programme.

The Opposition Leader said that since the new school term began, children have endured days without meals because water was not available for food preparation. Teachers, he claimed, have been forced to fetch water from the Potaro River, located nearly 1,000 feet from their quarters.

Mohamed also pointed out that former Amerindian Affairs Minister Pauline Sukhai reportedly visited the community last week, but despite complaints raised by residents, “no action has been taken.”

“We call on the relevant authorities to urgently intervene and restore proper access to water in Micobie,” Mohamed said in a statement. He added that government often acts with urgency “only when issues are made public.”

The Opposition Leader urged that the problem be fixed immediately so children in Micobie can return to school “under sanitary conditions.”

Up to press time, no official response has been issued by the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Housing and Water regarding the claims.
