WE HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE, GOVERNMENT OPENS ELECTIONS TO INTERNATIONAL SCRUTINY –  NANDLALL

Guyana Opens Doors to International Observers Ahead of September Elections

HGP Nightly News – Tiana Cole Reports

With Guyana set to head to the polls on September 1, 2025, for General and Regional Elections, the government has signaled its commitment to transparency by confirming that a broad contingent of international election observers will be invited to monitor the process.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall during his weekly televised program Issues in the News.

Among the organizations confirmed to observe the elections is the Carter Center, a respected institution founded by the late U.S. President Jimmy Carter, known for its global work in promoting democratic elections.

“Many more international observer teams will be invited and will be welcomed to observe the elections, because we have nothing to hide. We want transparency,” Nandlall affirmed.

The Attorney General further noted that the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) has historically championed the presence of international observers, stating that from 1968 to 1992, the PNC government resisted such oversight, blocking external scrutiny amid repeated allegations of electoral fraud.

“We fought for nearly three decades to have observers present because for 28 years, elections were rigged and international teams were barred,” he stated.

Nandlall emphasized that election credibility remains a central concern in Guyana’s political discourse, especially following the highly contentious 2020 election cycle, which saw a delay in declaring the results and drew widespread international criticism.

“We know who the electoral miscreants are… and what their tendencies are. The more observers present, the safer the electoral process,” he declared.

Guyana has maintained a tradition of allowing international election observers since 1992, reinforcing democratic norms. The upcoming polls are being closely watched, with both government and opposition preparing for what is expected to be a fiercely contested electoral season.
