WALTON-DESIR QUESTIONS GOVERNMENT TIMINGS IN NOW RAISING ALARM ON THE PRESENCE OF VENEZUELAN GANGS

FGM Raises Concerns Over PPP/C Handling of Venezuelan Migration

The Forward Guyana Movement’s (FGM) presidential candidate, Amanza Walton-Desir, has accused the ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) of exploiting the Venezuelan migration crisis for political advantage.

Speaking during a Facebook Live broadcast, Walton-Desir said she had been warning for years in the National Assembly about the dangers of unchecked migration and the potential for organized crime. She criticized the government for dismissing earlier calls for a registration and tracking system for migrants, only to raise alarm days before the September 1 elections.

“Their only aim is to hold on to power at all costs, even if it means opening up the country and letting in migrants they can later convert into votes,” Walton-Desir charged.

She added that President Irfaan Ali’s recent statements about Venezuelan gangs operating in Guyana are politically timed, pointing out that the issue is not new but is now being framed as an urgent threat for electoral purposes.

In response, President Ali, at a recent public meeting in Herstelling, defended his administration’s actions, noting that additional security measures have already been put in place. He stressed the importance of aligning with trusted regional and international partners to confront threats posed by organized crime.
