UNTRUE THAT BAIL IS NOT GRANTED IN EXTRADITION REQUESTS ATTORNEY DHURJON ARGUES

“It is untrue that bail is not granted in extradition request hearings.”
That’s the position of Attorney Siand Dhurjon, who represents Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, as he pushes back against claims surrounding their recent bail ruling.

The fiery national debate erupted after Magistrate Judy Latchman granted $150,000 bail each to the father and son in the ongoing extradition proceedings—prompting political criticism, including from Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, who publicly questioned the magistrate’s decision and called it a “convenience.”

But Attorney Dhurjon insists that the narrative being pushed is legally incorrect.

He dismissed assertions made by PPP Member of Parliament and attorney Sanjeev Datadin, who argued that Guyana’s Constitution prohibits bail in extradition matters.
Dhurjon says several legal precedents prove otherwise.

He further cautioned that public attacks on magistrates and judges—especially from high-ranking officials—risk undermining judicial independence.

On October 30, 2025, the U.S. Government formally requested the extradition of the well-known businessman, who is facing multiple indictments in the United States.
The charges include wire fraud, mail fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, aiding and abetting, and customs-related offenses connected to an alleged multimillion–dollar gold export and tax-evasion scheme.
