As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the University of Guyana’s Women in Law Association, in collaboration with the Institute of Gender Studies, hosted a vibrant Pinktober Awareness Event and Campus Walk on Saturday, October 18, at the Turkeyen Campus.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer, promote early detection, and emphasize the importance of gender justice and self-care. Organizers described Pinktober as “a time of awareness, compassion, and strength — honoring the warriors who have battled breast cancer.”
Guest speaker Christine Samu, from the Institute of Gender Studies and founder of the Breadfruit Collection, delivered an inspiring address on activism, community, and compassion. Sharing her personal journey, Samu urged participants to continue advocating for justice while caring for their own well-being.
“Activism is the price we pay for living on this earth. If we enjoy the justice and liberty we have today, it’s because someone once fought for those rights,” she reminded attendees.
The highlight of the day was the Pinktober Walk around the campus, where students, staff, and supporters dressed in pink marched in solidarity with breast cancer survivors and those still battling the disease. Participants carried motivational placards and chanted messages of hope and resilience, transforming the campus into a sea of unity and empowerment.
In closing, representatives of the Women in Law Association expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants, reaffirming their commitment to ongoing advocacy, awareness, and support—both within and beyond the university community.
