President Irfaan Ali Calls for National Solidarity in Emancipation Day 2026 Address

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — President Dr. Irfaan Ali has urged Guyanese at home and across the diaspora to honor the sacrifices of their African ancestors by rejecting division and working collectively to build a country grounded in mutual respect, equality, and shared prosperity.
Delivering his official message for Emancipation Day 2026, the Head of State described the transatlantic trade in captive Africans and the machinery of chattel slavery as the most abominable system in human history. However, he emphasized that formerly enslaved Guyanese emerged from bondage with vision and resolve rather than permanent bitterness.
“Fixed Their Gaze Steadily Upon the Future”
Reflecting on the dawn of freedom following centuries of enslavement, President Ali noted that freed Africans immediately embarked on a journey toward self-determination and economic empowerment:
“Though subjected to the horrors of enslavement, those African ancestors never relinquished their dignity, their humanity, or their quest for liberation,” President Dr. Irfaan Ali stated. “When the long night of bondage gave way to the dawn of freedom, our forebears did not greet the morning with bitterness in their hearts. Instead, they fixed their gaze steadily upon the future, seeking to create from their freedom a better world for themselves and for generations yet unborn.”

The Village Movement: Pillars of Modern Guyana
The President credited African Guyanese with laying the foundational bedrocks of modern Guyanese society through the historic Village Movement:
- Pioneering Self-Reliance: Freed men and women pooled meager financial resources to purchase abandoned plantation estates, establishing independent villages that became crucibles of culture and commerce.
- Diversifying the Economy: African Guyanese built enterprises, developed agricultural lands to feed local markets, and spearheaded early resource extraction in gold, bauxite, and diamond mining.
- Institutional Contributions: Through education, political leadership, sports, the arts, and the professions, their contributions became the very pillars upon which the republic stands.
“In the decades that followed, African Guyanese rose with extraordinary purpose,” Ali highlighted. “Through education, they sharpened minds. Through entrepreneurship, they built enterprises. Through their farms, they provided food for our homes and markets. Their contributions are the very pillars upon which modern Guyana stands.”
Transforming Sorrow Into Solidarity
Highlighting the contemporary importance of ancestral lessons, President Ali urged citizens to draw inspiration from how previous generations overcame adversity without succumbing to suspicion or racial animosity:
“They did not allow tragedy to harden their hearts into hatred. Instead, they transformed their sorrow into solidarity and their pain into purpose,” President Ali stated. “The greatest honor we can pay to them is in the work we do to create a society rooted in mutual respect, genuine equality, and shared prosperity… in the bridges we build across every divide.”
The Head of State concluded by calling on all Guyanese to reaffirm faith in one another and work collectively toward a stronger, more united, and prosperous nation.
