ALBION, BERBICE – President Dr. Irfaan Ali has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming Guyana’s agriculture sector through continued investment, innovation, and collaboration with farmers.

Speaking to rice farmers at the Albion Estate in Region 6 on Thursday, the President stated that billions have already been invested in agriculture and agro-processing, with more to come.

“We don’t shy away from issues. We address them head-on and take responsibility,” President Ali stated, emphasizing transparency and accountability in agricultural development.

Boosting Rice Production and Cutting Costs

President Ali acknowledged that while rice production remains a key pillar of the agricultural economy, areas for improvement must be addressed, particularly in cost reduction.

“We have to reduce input costs—fuel, drainage and irrigation, land preparation. This is critical to keeping our farmers profitable,” he noted.

Promoting Integrated Farming

To mitigate risks and diversify incomes, President Ali encouraged farmers to adopt integrated farming practices.

“For every 10 acres of rice, use 1 acre to cultivate a high-value, high-yield crop,” he suggested.
“This will reduce risk, increase productivity, and diversify income streams.”

He added that the government would work alongside farmers to establish integrated farm models and provide the necessary support systems.

Forward Vision for Agro-Development

The President emphasized the importance of a clear national vision for agriculture—one that encompasses modernizing infrastructure, promoting sustainability, and enhancing agro-processing capacity to add value to local produce.

The event was part of a broader outreach by the President to engage directly with stakeholders in Guyana’s rice belt and other farming communities.
