The sod was officially turned on Monday for Terminal 2 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), marking a major step in Guyana’s aviation expansion.
President Irfaan Ali, in delivering the feature address, said the project represents more than just new infrastructure—it is about building a “global scale aviation ecosystem” that will include a first-class aviation school and the capacity to host major international events.
“We have to have a terminal that can process thousands of people within 72 hours, because we’re going to build a world-class arena to host international events here,” the president stated.
Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill said rising passenger numbers, growing cargo operations, and more direct flights made the new terminal both timely and necessary.
“The world is coming to Guyana, and Guyana is preparing for the world,” Edghill emphasized, noting expanded business lounges, concessions, and faster processing times.
Tourism Minister Oneidge Walrond added that the terminal reflects the rapid growth of the tourism sector, with visitor arrivals up 18% compared to last year.
The project, first announced during the 2025 National Budget, carries an investment of $7 billion and is expected to significantly boost CJIA’s capacity, efficiency, and global competitiveness.
