Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, on Monday led the sod-turning ceremony for the construction of a new primary school in the Arakaka/Moruca sub-district, Region One.
The project, initially slated to be funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), was taken over by the Government of Guyana to fast-track its completion. Minister Manickchand explained that the decision was made because the Santa Rosa Primary School is severely overcrowded, and the lengthy processes associated with international funding could not be accommodated.
Funded by local resources, the new facility is part of the government’s ongoing investment in educational infrastructure, aimed at bridging the gap between hinterland and coastal communities. The Minister emphasized that the modern learning space will help address overcrowding and structural deficiencies while creating a more conducive environment for learning.
Local leaders have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism about the opportunities it will create for children in the area. Construction is set to begin immediately, with completion expected in the coming year.
The Heradia Primary School project forms part of the Ministry of Education’s broader strategy to modernize learning environments nationwide. To date, the government has built 24 new primary schools, reconstructed 21, and significantly extended 36 across Guyana.
