Yet another act of terrorism has been added to the police crime files as investigators hunt a Spanish-speaking suspect linked to Sunday night’s deadly explosion at the Mobil Gas Station on Regent Street, Georgetown.
Police believe the explosion was triggered by two bulky black plastic bags that were placed near the propane cylinders at the service station.
Moments later, the bags detonated, killing six-year-old Soraya Browne and injuring four others.
At the time of the blast, a silver Toyota Premio (PTT 8275) was parked in the compound with five occupants, all of whom sustained injuries.
Soraya was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital, while the remaining victims remain hospitalized in stable condition.
Eyewitness Account
Taxi driver Andre McRae, who was refueling at the station, recalled seeing the driver of the Toyota Premio step out of the vehicle just moments before the blast.
McRae said he immediately rushed to the aid of the victims trapped inside the burning car and joined others in extinguishing the flames before emergency responders arrived.
The explosion also damaged four other motor vehicles and caused minor structural damage to a nearby building.
Forensic Investigation Underway
Crime scene investigators recovered fragments of black plastic bags and pieces of adhesive tape, which have since been sent for forensic analysis.
Authorities believe the explosion was deliberately set, marking the third such incident in Guyana since May 2025.
On May 17, 2025, explosive devices were detonated near the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost and the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) substation on Mandela Avenue.
Police had previously identified two Spanish-speaking men, allegedly aided by a Guyanese national, as suspects in those cases. However, no further updates were released on their arrests or whereabouts.
Ongoing Investigation
The Guyana Police Force is now treating Sunday’s blast as a terror-related incident and has urged members of the public with information about the suspect to come forward.
Investigations are ongoing.
