The Government of Guyana has officially launched a landmark initiative designed to strengthen gender equality, improve workplace conditions, and reduce discrimination across both the public and private sectors.
The National Gender Equality and Empowerment Seal, launched on Wednesday, is a joint effort by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning, and the Ministry of Public Service and Government Efficiency and Implementation.
The program aims to establish measurable standards that promote fairness, prevent gender-based discrimination, and reduce workplace violence nationwide.
“Equality must go beyond quotas — it must be grounded in merit.”
Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, underscored that actual national progress requires empowered citizens and accountable leadership.
“It must not be because it is a quota system that you get your space and place. It must be on merit. When we speak of equality, we also speak of merit,”

She emphasized that the Gender Equality Seal is not just policy, but a fully actionable program supported by indicators that agencies and businesses will be expected to meet.
Labour Minister: “The challenges are unmistakable.”
Minister of Labour and Manpower Planning, Komal Griffith, highlighted the persistent inequalities in Guyana’s labour market.
“Women still face higher unemployment, discrimination, and increased harassment.
Men in low-wage sectors endure unsafe conditions. Vulnerable groups continue to struggle quietly.”
He said the new initiative directly supports the government’s manifesto commitments to expand workplace protections and promote social justice.
“Discrimination in any form is unacceptable.”
Minister of Public Service and Government Efficiency and Implementation, Sulifar Ali, noted that Guyana has advanced significantly in women’s participation across various sectors.
“We must ensure this Seal is widely known and understood. We all have a part to play in signaling that discrimination in any form is unacceptable.”
Part of 16 Days of Activism
The launch forms part of Minister Persaud’s annual 16 Days of Activism campaign, which raises awareness on gender-based violence and advocates for stronger prevention systems in homes, communities, and workplaces.
The Gender Equality and Empowerment Seal will roll out nationally in phases, targeting ministries, state agencies, and private-sector employers.
