GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — What began as a quiet Wednesday morning at Lot 331 Cummings Street quickly turned into a fight for survival for Sandra Sandy and her niece. A ferocious blaze ripped through the upper flat of their residence, destroying the wooden section of the building and leaving a trail of charred memories and millions of dollars in losses.
The property is owned by the renowned Guyanese international bodybuilder Hugh Ross, who was not on the premises at the time of the incident.
“House on Fire!”: A Narrow Escape
Sandra Sandy was in the middle of preparing breakfast when the peaceful morning was shattered by the screams of alert neighbors.
- The Alarm: “I was preparing my breakfast, then I heard the neighbours shouting, ‘Sandra, Sandra, house on fire, house on fire,’” Sandy recalled.
- Point of No Return: Upon rushing to the bedroom, Sandy realized the situation was already dire. The intensity of the heat and the speed of the flames meant that even basic intervention was impossible. “When I go to the room, we couldn’t save anything. Not even a bucket of water could’ve put it out,” she said.
- Vehicle Destroyed: While Sandy and her niece managed to escape with their lives, a vehicle parked on the property was completely consumed by the fire.
Firefighters Save the Block
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was praised for its tactical response, which prevented a localized disaster from becoming a city-wide emergency.
The Long Road to Recovery
Throughout the morning, friends and relatives gathered at the scorched site to offer support to the displaced women. While the financial blow is estimated in the millions, Sandy expressed a small sense of relief that the property and vehicle were covered by insurance. The GFS fire investigators remain on the scene to determine the origin of the blaze, which remains unknown at this hour.
